ASTM A134 electric-fusion arc-welded steel pipe is a large-diameter welded pipe solution for structural applications requiring stable roundness, controlled wall thickness, reliable weld integrity, and flexible dimensional customization. ASTM A134 covers straight-seam or spiral-seam electric-fusion arc-welded steel pipe in NPS 16 and larger sizes, normally with wall thickness up to 3/4 in. [19 mm], while other dimensions may be supplied when they meet the remaining specification requirements. The steel grade is selected according to the ASTM plate specification ordered by the purchaser, making ASTM A134 suitable for structural columns, pipe piles, bridge structures, marine structures, heavy equipment frames, and large fabricated steel assemblies.
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Material | Carbon steel plate / low-alloy structural steel plate |
| Standard | ASTM A134 / A134M |
| Common Grades | ASTM A36, ASTM A283 Grade C, ASTM A285 Grade C, ASTM A572 Grade 50, ASTM A516 Grade 70 |
| Manufacturing Method | Electric-fusion arc-welded, straight seam or spiral seam |
| Outside Diameter | NPS 16 and above; commonly 406.4 mm and larger |
| Wall Thickness | Up to 19 mm under ASTM A134 scope; other thicknesses by agreement if compliant |
| Length | 1–12 m, custom fixed length available |
| Tolerance Range | According to ASTM A134 / project drawing / purchase order |
| Straightness | Controlled for structural fit-up; project-specific straightness tolerance available |
| Surface Condition | Bare, black, shot-blasted, primer-coated, anti-corrosion coated, or galvanized by agreement |
| Heat Treatment | As-welded normally; stress relieving or other heat treatment by agreement when required |
| Inspection | Visual inspection, dimensional inspection, weld inspection, hydrostatic test or NDT by agreement |
| Application Positioning | Large-diameter structural steel pipe requiring weld reliability and dimensional consistency |
| Procurement Concern | Practical Risk | Our Solution |
| Grade selection is often unclear because ASTM A134 is a pipe manufacturing standard, not a single-grade material standard. | The wrong plate grade may lead to insufficient yield strength, poor weldability, or non-compliance with project drawings. | We confirm the design requirement first, then match the pipe with suitable plate grades such as A36, A283 Grade C, A572 Grade 50, A285 Grade C, or A516 Grade 70, with MTC traceability to the ordered plate standard. |
| Large-diameter welded pipe may show weld misalignment, uneven reinforcement, or poor fit-up. | Poor weld geometry can create fabrication problems during pile splicing, column connection, or structural assembly. | We control edge preparation, forming accuracy, welding parameters, weld appearance, and final dimensional inspection before shipment. NDT can be added according to the project requirement. |
| Structural pipe buyers often need coating, fixed length, beveling, and documentation in one order. | Multiple suppliers increase coordination time and increase the chance of dimensional or document mismatch. | We can supply pipe cutting, beveling, shot blasting, primer coating, anti-corrosion coating, marking, packing, and inspection documents under one controlled production workflow. |
